Artificial flowers are a fantastic low-maintenance way to bring vibrant colour and fresh vibes into your space without worrying about wilting or weekly water changes. But while they don’t need sunlight or soil, they can collect dust over time.
Whether your arrangement needs a quick weekly refresh or a deep clean after sitting on a shelf for months, here is your ultimate guide on how to clean faux flowers without damaging them.
Method 1: The Quick Weekly Dust
- The Hairdryer Trick: Hold your stem upside down and use a hairdryer set to COOL and LOW speed. This blows away loose dust in seconds without melting glue or fraying silk petals.
- Microfibre Cloth or Feather Duster: Gently wipe down each petal and leaf starting from the centre and working your way out.
- Paintbrush or Makeup Brush: For tight nooks and intricate flower heads like hydrangeas or peonies, a soft, clean eyeshadow or blush brush works wonders.
Method 2: The Salt or Rice Shake
Silk flowers can bleed colour or lose their shape if they get wet. The salt trick acts as a gentle, dry abrasive that scrubs off dust without liquid.
How to do it:
- Grab a large plastic or paper bag.
- Pour in some coarse salt or uncooked white rice.
- Place your floral stems inside (petals facing down into the salt).
- Seal the bag tightly around the stems.
- Gently shake the bag for 30–60 seconds.
The grains will pull the dust off the fabric! Pull the stems out and tap them gently over the sink to remove any leftover salt particles.
